Below we explore the effects of different weather conditions on exterior paints.

Rain

Painting externally with the risk of rain can be a costly mistake to make. Not only will your paint be wasted or ‘washed away’, it will also take you much longer. In addition, other materials externally can be affected by drips.

Direct Sunlight

As a contractor working outside, lovely sunny conditions are ideal, however direct sunlight can cause paint to dry far too quickly. For paint to adhere properly to the substrate, it needs to soak onto the surface to absorb properly. If the paint doesn’t have an opportunity to completely adhere, any applied paint or coating is in danger of failing.

Wind

Just like the effects of direct sunlight, windy conditions can lead to the paint not having a sufficient amount of time to adhere correctly. There is also the added risk of sediment being blown into the wet paint coating.

Low Temperatures

Cold weather in the UK often brings high relative humidity that affects certain paints.

Such temperature ranges can cause issues such as improper film build up and poor colour uniformity.

High Temperatures

Usually with hot weather in the UK comes high humidity levels. When humidity is high, the paint is exposed to a greater amount of water vapour. This affects the drying time of paint regardless of the suspension liquid within the formulation.

Conclusion: The ideal weather conditions for painting

  • Ideal air temperature of between 12oC and 35oC

  • Overcast cloudy conditions

  • No risk of rain during the application and drying period

  • Maximum of 80% Humidity

  • The substrate must be a minimum of 3oC above the dew point

Ideally these weather conditions are perfect for your next exterior painting project, however, we know that these conditions don’t always occur.

Paint can be applied in any of the above conditions, although you must prepare for the risks that accompany them.
