OSMO UV PROTECTION OIL

Osmo UV Protection Oil is a clear satin finish for exterior wood that keeps timber looking beautiful through all weathers.

Osmo UV Protection Oil provides a protective finish in a beautiful satin sheen for exterior vertical wood, such as cladding and fences. It is self-priming, microporous and allows the wood to breathe by reducing swelling and shrinkage. The water-repellent surface resists cracking, peeling, flaking and blistering. Osmo UV Protection Oil can be used as a topcoat on wood previously colour treated (such as Osmo Country Colour). The oil has been specially developed to massively extend intervals between renovations.

 How To Video

Applied using 100mm Osmo Microfibre rollers, tray and frame.

Areas of Use

Osmo UV Protection Oil is ideal for all vertical exterior wood surfaces.

Exterior: doors, windows, window shutters (dimensionally stable elements), carports, timber, cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, summer houses (dimensionally unstable elements, bamboo poles (e.g. in screens)

All exterior woods grey into a patina colour over time. Osmo UV Protection Oil slows this greying process by (UV Factor) 12 times in comparison with untreated wood. This helps to keep the greying effect of UV rays at bay and protect your wood for longer. Active ingredients prevent mould, algae and fungal attack. Simply apply without sanding. Easy and seamless application - the finish stays workable while coating.

Any other wooden substrate not listed that has been treated with another surface coating (e.g. varnish, lacquer) must be completely sanded before use.

How does the 410 Clear and 420 Clear Extra differ?

Both products will significantly enhance the natural character of the wood. The 410 Clear supports a healthy living environment without the use of biocides with a finish that is designed to be safer for humans, plants and animals. This is the eco-friendlier choice.

The 420 Extra Clear is the more robust choice It provides greater protection and is even more effective against algae, mildew and fungal attack.

I treated a wooden substrate with a base coat of a coloured UV Protection Oil and a top coat of UV Protection Oil Clear - how do I maintain the coloured finish going forwards?

We would recommend a thin application of the UV Protection Oil clear. It is not recommended to apply another UV Protection Oil coloured coat, as the coloured pigments may result in an undesirable patchy effect.

Preparation

Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%).

UV Protection Oil is ready to use, please do not thin. Stir well before use.

Clean old microporous stains thoroughly. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed. As a general rule, wear a dust mask during sanding works. Do not sand smooth surfaces finer than P120.

Fresh wood containing extractives and especially hard wood needs to weather off (for approximately 6 weeks) after installation. Thereby the wood becomes absorbent, and the wood finish adheres optimally.

A base coat with a coloured finish is recommended, e.g. Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain or Osmo Country Colour. Osmo UV Protection Oil should then be used as a topcoat.

For renovations, clean old microporous wood finishes thoroughly. Clean and refresh already greyed or weathered wood at the same time with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel.

The finished surface is, among other things, influenced by the wood’s natural characteristics. We advise a trial application, especially for unfamiliar surfaces. This is a great way to test how the surface will look when finished. Giving you maximum confidence in the outcome. Samples of all Osmo products are available to purchase.

If additional protection against blue stain, rot and insects is desired, pre-treat the wood, if possible, on all sides with Osmo WR Base Coat*.

*Use biocides safely. Always read label and product information before use.

Application

Apply thinly along the wood grain with Osmo Soft Tip Brush or Osmo Microfibre Roller and spread well.

Allow to dry for approx. 12 hours with good ventilation.

Then apply the second coat.

Aftercare

Oils enhance the natural tone of wood (permanent wet effect).

Depending on the degree of weathering, apply one coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil to the cleaned and intact finish after approx. 3–4 years.

For areas, which are highly exposed to weather, such as weatherboard, post caps or windowsills, please expect substantially shorter intervals between renovations. Vertical elements mounted onto horizontal wood should have at least a 15-degree angle. Sharp edges must be rounded (radius > 2 mm).

If the greying process has already begun, refresh the surface with Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel and re-apply 2 coats of Osmo UV Protection Oil.

To achieve the UV protection factor 12, it is necessary to apply 2 coats of UV Protection Oil Extra. With only one coat on untreated wood, the life of the finish will be significantly shorter.

Due to the high oil content, UV Protection Oil has a light yellowing effect when used on white substrates. For a topcoat on white finished areas, we recommend Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain 900 White.

Osmo UV Protection Oil contains biocides and therefore is only to be used on exterior areas. The added active ingredients delay or minimize the risk of algae and fungal attack.
